What If Birthdays Were About Alignment, Not Age? Try These Reflection Questions

 In Better Life

Today is my 59th birthday. I see it as a wonderful opportunity to pause — a gentle invitation to check in with myself.

Where am I headed?

What matters most now?

Am I living in alignment with who I truly want to be?

Life moves quickly. It’s easy to stay busy, keep pushing forward, and forget to ask whether we’re actually moving toward what lights us up. Birthdays create a built-in moment to slow down and listen inward (especially as I approach the big 6 0!)

For me, this year feels especially meaningful. I feel deeply grateful to be aligned with my purpose — sharing ideas that have transformed my own life, especially the compassionate self-awareness I’ve gained through Internal Family Systems (IFS) and my ALIGN model. Being able to explore these concepts in my weekly positivity tips and through my speaking programs fills me with joy! It feels less like work and more like a calling.

And yet, I still use birthdays as a chance to reflect honestly. Growth doesn’t stop just because we’re on a meaningful path.

If your birthday is coming up — or even if it’s not — here are a few gentle questions you might ask yourself:

  • What am I most grateful for about who I’ve become this year?
  • Where do I feel most aligned — and where might I be pushing against myself?
  • What dreams or desires are quietly asking for more attention?
  • Is there a part of me that needs reassurance, rest, or encouragement right now?
  • How do I want to feel as I move into this next year of life?

These aren’t questions to judge yourself. They’re invitations to listen with curiosity and compassion.

Because ultimately, birthdays aren’t just about getting older. They’re about becoming more ourselves.

Here’s to growth, alignment, and another year of becoming!
