The Missing Piece in Most New Year Goals – Clarity Instead of Force
As a new year begins, we may find ourselves surrounded by two very different messages.
One says: “Push yourself. Growth requires discipline. Do the hard things.”
The other says: “Follow your enthusiasm. Go with the flow. Don’t force what doesn’t feel right.”
So which is it?
IFS has taught me that the answer isn’t choosing one or the other—it’s learning how to tell where the effort is coming from.
When “Pushing” Comes From Pressure
Sometimes our goals are driven by fear-based parts of us: the inner critic, the achiever, the one who doesn’t want to fall behind or disappoint anyone.
When these parts are in charge, even well-intended goals feel heavy. There’s tension, urgency, and a constant sense of should. Progress feels draining, not energizing.
This kind of effort may look productive on the outside—but inside, it often leads to burnout, resentment, or quitting altogether.
When “Hard Things” Come From Alignment
Other times, we choose goals that truly matter to us. They may still be challenging. They may stretch us. They may require courage and consistency.
But underneath the effort, there’s something different. There’s clarity instead of force. Choice instead of pressure. Commitment without self-attack.
Think of training for something you genuinely want versus forcing yourself into a path because you think you should. Both are hard—but only one feels alive.
Following Enthusiasm Doesn’t Mean Avoiding Discomfort
Enthusiasm isn’t constant pleasure. It’s aliveness. It’s meaning.
Sometimes enthusiasm says, “This matters enough to be uncomfortable.”
Other times it says, “This struggle isn’t mine.”
The key is learning to pause and listen.
A Question for the New Year
When setting goals for this year, try asking:
“Am I moving from curiosity and choice… or from fear and pressure?”
If it’s curiosity and choice, you’re likely being led by your deeper Self.
If it’s fear and pressure, a protective part may be running the show—and it might need reassurance before you move forward.
So this year, follow your enthusiasm with goals that feel aligned and meaningful to your True Self. Instead of struggling, there will be a deeper sense of purpose and passion.
