You Already Know What to Do… So Why Is It Still So Hard?
One of the biggest surprises in my personal growth journey has been realizing that understanding something isn’t the same as becoming it.
For years, I assumed that once I learned a new concept, I’d naturally begin living it. If I understood that worrying didn’t help, I would stop worrying. If I understood that I couldn’t control other people, I would stop trying. If I understood that I was worthy just as I am, I’d stop being so hard on myself.
But life doesn’t seem to work that way.
I’ve come to realize there’s often a gap between understanding and being. We can intellectually understand an idea long before it becomes our natural way of living.
I’ve experienced this many times with Internal Family Systems. I understand that my protective parts are trying to help me. I know they’re not the enemy. But there are still moments when other parts get frustrated with them or wish they would just disappear. Then I remember… this isn’t about getting it perfect. It’s about practicing a new relationship with myself.
I wonder if real growth happens when our nervous system finally catches up with what our mind already knows.
It’s almost as if, after enough experiences of practicing, our inner world quietly says,
“Oh… I trust this now.”
Suddenly we notice we’re responding differently. We pause before reacting. We recover more quickly after disappointment. We become a little more patient, a little more accepting, a little more at peace-not because we’re trying harder, but because something inside us has genuinely changed.
That realization has helped me become much more patient with myself.
Instead of asking, “Why am I not there yet?” I’m learning to ask, “What if I’m exactly where I need to be?”
Maybe growth isn’t about collecting more knowledge. Maybe it’s about giving ourselves enough experiences for that knowledge to become embodied.
So if you’ve ever found yourself thinking, “I know this… why can’t I live it yet?” please know you’re not alone.
Perhaps you’re not doing anything wrong. Perhaps you’re simply in the beautiful space between understanding… and becoming.
