A New Kind of New Year's Resolution
As 2013 draws to a close and some of us start contemplating our New Year’s Resolutions for 2014, I would like to propose a new type of resolution. Maybe you don’t normally make New Year’s Resolutions, or maybe you choose the same one each year, but consider the following as a possibility.
Imagine you are living your ideal life – perfect in every way. You have the perfect relationship with your partner, kids and/or family. You have the perfect situation at work and with your finances. You have the perfect balance between focusing on yourself, others, and work. Now imagine someone from your family (maybe your partner, one of your kids, a parent, etc.) describing this ideal you to someone who has never met you. What are three words they would use to capture this perfect you? For myself, I would hope they would describe me as patient, encouraging, and loving. Now imagine someone from your work describing you to someone who has never met you. If they were describing my ideal self, I hope they would choose the words helpful, kind, and positive. Repeat this process for other areas of your life that are important to you – perhaps a group in your community, your friends, etc. Are there any of these descriptions that could use some work in 2014? If so, write them down, post them around your office, your bathroom, your kitchen… For example, “Today I choose to be more patient!” What better goal than to work towards becoming a more perfect YOU!
